Vacancy: Head of Downstream Processing

Are you a protein science buff, with a hankerin’ for the fine art of cheese-makin’? Come to Ghent!

The Downstream Processing (DSP) posse at Those Vegan Cowboys is on a mission to corral and purify microbial caseins, to make ‘em shine in the cow-free cheese of future generations. Our team rides hard, refining and understanding these proteins so they’ll make the tastiest grub this side of the prairie.

Now, we’re fixin’ to find a new lead stallion—a true buckaroo who knows their way around (novel) protein purification, ready to guide this herd to greener pastures.

Job Description

• Lead and coach the DSP team, fostering a collaborative culture.
• Develop, optimize and scale downstream processes – ensuring alignment with regulatory and quality standards.
• Making sure key performance indicators and project timelines are met.
• Collaborate closely and share expertise with the other teams, including the manufacturing and regulatory departments.
• Prepare and/or review protocols and project reports.
• Manage and maintain ongoing collaborations with external partners.
• Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements in DSP to maintain a competitive edge.
• Join forces with the management team to align the DSP strategy with Those Vegan Cowboys’ long-term goals.

Your profile

• Experience in process development, optimization and scaling of DSP operations – from R&D to commercial scale.
• Leadership experience in a biotech setting, with a proven track record of coaching teams and delivering results.
• Understanding of the regulatory environment is a big plus.
• Know-how of analytical method development is an added value.
• Problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment.
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Advanced degree in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, or a related field (PhD or equivalent by experience).
• Minimum 10 years of experience in Biotech/Bio-engineering/Life Sciences – with a focus on protein purification/production
• Expected to work onsite in Ghent, Belgium
